Butterfly's Ancient Traditions

Puccini's Madame Butterfly has lasting appeal, in part, because of the heroine's struggle between ancient cultural traditions and her modern circumstances. We are pleased to present, for the first time, Kay Hoke, who will offer a closer look at this audience favorite - a tragedy for the ages.

About Kay Hoke
Kay Hoke is currently professor of music and chair of the division of fine arts at Brevard College. She has taught both graduate and undergraduate music theory and music history courses, and courses for the general population. Her work as a national workshop leader for Music! Words! Opera!, a program of Opera America, takes her to regional companies throughout the United States. Her collaboration with Pulitzer prize-winning composer Robert Ward titled "The American Music Theatre Project: A Study of Three Contemporary One-Act Operas" is expected to be published in 2008, and her essays and synopses on operas are published annually by Indianapolis Opera.
